Surfaces for people who already have a job

Most “product design” is still aimed at someone who wandered in. Our people did not wander in. They have a shift, a queue, a radio, a Saturday list. They will forgive an unfashionable typeface. They will not forgive a screen that hides the one number they need or a CLI that uses different words than the dashboard.

We treat CLIs, admin surfaces, and SDKs as one language. Same nouns. Same verbs. Same error copy. That is how a tool survives its second year, when the original designer is on another product and the new hire has to learn the system from the interface alone.

Density is a feature

A lifestyle app can afford whitespace. A live operations dashboard cannot. The shift lead at an airport is not browsing. They are trying to see the roadway, the ramp, and the alert that matters before the next radio call. A clinic desk is trying to find the patient and the last note without opening six tabs. A venue host is trying to see what is free this hour.

Density done well is not clutter. It is hierarchy: the live thing, the exception, the action. Keyboard paths for the three flows that happen a hundred times a day. Empty states that are documentation — “nothing on the ramp” is a sentence, not a blank card with a succulent.

Errors are part of the interface

The most-read copy in an operator tool is the error. “Something went wrong” is how you train people to ignore you. We write the failure the way we would write it in the incident channel: what failed, what is still safe, what to do next. The CLI and the dashboard say it the same way. If they drift, someone will learn the wrong one under pressure.

Tokens and components live next to application code. A design system that cannot be imported from the repo is a PDF. We will not maintain a second source of truth in Figma for a surface that changes every week in production.
